In order to be ready for any theatrical job, I decided to be a shop demonstrator, which meant I could leave at one day’s notice when the big moment came. So now I was one of those tiresome people standing there spouting to the passing throng about the advantages of this bread or biscuit, this flower vase, this silk scarf, this jam or marmalade, this cooking pot, this pair of scissors, this food mixer. This absolutely anything. It was always the best, and I found myself at one time or another in every possible kind of shop and exhibition.
